Beyond the Board: Kenny King, CFA

Kenny King’s path to VNA Health Group’s Board of Trustees began with a family connection. His wife, Nora, was involved with the Children & Family Health Institute (CFHI), and after attending an event with her, Kenny began asking questions. “I learned more about what the VNA does, and before long, I was invited to join the board,” he recalled. “I was able to start on one committee before getting more deeply involved in the organization.”

Since then, Kenny has immersed himself in the organization’s work, serving on the Finance Committee and chairing the Mission Civility, Belonging, and Inclusion (CBI) Committee. With a career in finance—he is Managing Director at Alter Domus and a CFA Charterholder—he brings a unique lens to the board. “When you sit on the Finance Committee, you get to see how the economics work behind the scenes,” he explained. “It’s an important balance: we see the frontline workers delivering incredible care and also understand how the organization operates in the real world.”

Clara, daughter of Kenny and Nora King, spoke at the 2019 Beach Ball about overcoming a speech delay through CFHI’s Early Intervention program, and joined VNA Health Group’s auctioneer for the live appeal. Kenny and Nora served as event Co-Chairs.

For Kenny, the work is also deeply personal. When his daughter experienced a speech delay, the Kings turned to CFHI’s Early Intervention program. “A lot of people think of VNA Health Group as primarily hospice care,” Kenny said, “but it’s so much more. From newborns to people in their 80s, the services span the full continuum of life.”

His family’s connection didn’t stop there. In 2020, his mother-in-law became a VNA Health Group patient during the last year and a half of her life. “From wound care to vitals to hospice, the nurses and doctors were amazing,” he said. “When you’re dealing with aging parents, you realize how critical it is to have a resource like VNA Health Group. It’s different when you experience it firsthand: the emotional support, the compassion, the ease they bring in such a difficult time.”

Kenny and Nora King served as Co-Chairs of the 2024 Beach Ball, which welcomed more than 500 guests and raised critical funds to support VNA Health Group’s mission.

Chairing the Mission CBI Committee has also opened Kenny’s eyes to the diversity of people and needs across VNA Health Group’s service area. “You see different backgrounds, different economics, different identities,” he explained. “It teaches you the little things that build trust, like taking your shoes off when you enter an Asian family’s home. Those small gestures mean so much in patient care, and being part of this work has made me more aware of that.”

He has also been struck by the passion of the staff and leadership. “When I meet the people behind the scenes and see how dedicated they are, I am inspired. Everyone is working toward the mission of helping people live their best lives. At my day job, we’re trying to do that by making money for people. Here, the vision comes alive in such a direct and meaningful way.”

In 2024, Kenny and Nora co-chaired VNA Health Group’s annual Beach Ball, which welcomed more than 500 guests and raised crucial funds for VNA Health Group’s programs. “It was a privilege to be part of it,” he said, “and to help celebrate the caregivers and the mission.”

Looking back on his journey with VNA Health Group, Kenny believes that anyone with a passion for helping others can make an impact. “You don’t need a healthcare background to get involved,” he said. “There’s room for everyone to contribute, and it’s an amazing feeling to be part of this organization.”

Born and raised in Staten Island, New York, Kenny holds a B.S. in Management from Tulane University. He lives in Rumson, New Jersey, with Nora, their daughter, and their son. In his free time, he enjoys golfing and reading non-fiction books.
