Celebrating the Love in Action of Our Volunteers
At VNA Health Group, volunteering is more than giving time. It is an act of compassion, connection, and service that directly supports our mission to care for individuals and families during some of life’s most meaningful moments. This month, we proudly celebrate and honor the love in action demonstrated by our amazing volunteers. They are compassionate, committed, and united in service to our patients, families, and communities.
We are deeply grateful to the members of our community who donate their time, talents, and hearts through volunteer work with VNA Health Group. Their dedication strengthens our hospice programs, supports our care teams, and makes a lasting difference for those we serve across New Jersey.
How Volunteers Support VNA Health Group
VNA Health Group volunteers serve in many meaningful ways, each role grounded in compassion and connection. Volunteer Visitors bring companionship and comfort to patients in their homes, while also giving caregivers a welcomed moment of relief. Comfort Call Volunteers provide regular check-ins for patients and families, offering reassurance and helping ensure care needs are met. Bereavement Volunteers support families alongside our Bereavement Counselors through support calls, memorial services, group sessions, and resources for children.
Our We Honor Veterans volunteers are specially trained to recognize and honor deserving men and women who have served our country with dignity. Behind the Scenes Volunteers strengthen our mission through administrative support, heartfelt creations like Memory Bears, and seasonal efforts, including our cherished Seasons of Hope holiday gift drive. Together, our volunteers bring comfort, dignity, and kindness to VNA Health Group families and the community in every season.
Volunteer Spotlights: Why They Serve
To highlight the impact of volunteering at VNA Health Group, we are honored to share the voices of a few volunteers who have generously shared what hospice volunteering means to them.
“I chose to volunteer for the VNA hospice program because I wanted to give back. My mother used hospice at the end of her life, and they were outstanding. I have been volunteering for a few years. I find enormous satisfaction and emotional fulfillment visiting hospice patients, listening to them relive their lives, and the strength they exhibit. I definitely found my calling, and I am so grateful to the VNA for trusting me with their most vulnerable patients.”
-Jane Lazar

“I wanted to give back for the care my husband received in hospice. I volunteer because I want to do something useful in my life, because I know how it feels to be on the other side. I have been a volunteer for seven years. Volunteering gives me purpose, knowing I can still be useful and helpful. My favorite part is the people I met. Everyone is so kind and caring. I have met the most amazing people, who I have the privilege to call friends.”
-Chris Assante

“I am honored to share that 2026 marks my 30th year as an active hospice volunteer, a journey that has enriched my life with compassion, purpose, and gratitude. Serving others during sacred moments has strengthened my faith and deepened my commitment to making a difference.”
-Barbara James
These stories reflect the heart of volunteer work at VNA Health Group. Hospice volunteering is not only about supporting others. It also creates deep personal connections and lasting fulfillment for those who serve.
