The Emerging Leadership Board (ELB), VNA’s young professional’s board, raised more than $25,000 in support of “New Mom Starter Kits” to help first-time mothers care for their babies at home.

Each kit is valued at $100 and includes much-needed items such as onesies, baby proofing gear, baby wipes and teething rings.

Our visiting nurses deliver the kits to first-time moms enrolled into the Nurse-Family Partnership program. Nurse-Family Partnership is a national model that pairs registered nurses with low-income first-time mothers for home visits. The visits begin during pregnancy and continue for two years following birth. The Children and Family Health Institute at VNA Health Group operates the program in Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Somerset Counties.

“Having a newborn at home can be overwhelming,” says Laura Hanley, Chair of the Emerging Leadership Board, and new mother herself. “We wanted to provide the basics — the important items you may not realize you need until the baby has arrived.”

“Our nurses have delivered several dozen of the “New Mom Kits,” and our mothers could not be more grateful,” says Colleen Nelson, RN, BSN, Vice President, Clinical Operations for VNA's Children and Family Health Institute. “The kits help our nurses to arrive prepared, get moms and babies settled, and start them off in the right direction.”

Last summer, the ELB organized an inaugural “Summer Soirée” to kick off fundraising for the kits. Sponsors of the event included the Aldrich Family, Allied World, Arthur L. Chianese, ESQ-CPA; BCS Private Wealth Management; Conner, Strong & Buckelew; Mr. and Mrs. Jon Eckert; First Brokers Securities; The Foster Family; Gloria Nilson & Co. Real Estate; Harbor Docks; Marbro Inc.; Mr. Stephen E. Trimboli; and Mr. and Mrs. William Spector.
