5 Signs You’re Not Getting Enough Sleep [Infographic]

When we sleep, our bodies and minds rest and recover. Memory and mood are both affected by the amount and quality of sleep we receive each night. Getting a full night’s rest verses being sleep deprived can be the difference between having a happy, productive day or being in a state of irritability and disorganization. According to the American Sleep Association, 50-70 million adults have a sleeping disorder. Sleep deprivation affects over one-quarter of adults with 35.3% reporting less than the recommended 7 hours of sleep each night.

Fatigue and drowsiness can prove fatal in certain circumstances. In hospitals over 100,000 deaths occur each year due to medical errors with sleep deprivation being a large contributing factor. An estimated 1,550 deaths and 71,000 injuries occur from driver-fatigue related car accidents.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, your sleep needs may differ from that of your children or parents.

Sleep Needs by Age:

  • Newborns (0-3 months): Sleep range of 14-17 hours each day
  • Infants (4-11 months): Sleep range of 12-15 hours
  • Toddlers (1-2 years): Sleep range of 11-14 hours
  • Preschoolers (3-5): Sleep range of 10-13 hours
  • School-age children (6-13): Sleep range of 9-11 hours
  • Teenagers (14-17): Sleep range of 8-10 hours
  • Younger adults (18-25): Sleep range of 7-9 hours
  • Adults (26-64): Sleep range of 7-9 hours
  • Older adults (65+): Sleep range of 7-8 hours

Getting the right amount of sleep each night will keep you alert and in a positive mindset. If you experience any of the 5 symptoms in our infographic below, consult your doctor as you might not be getting enough sleep needed each night!
