Ruth Hyman Jewish Hospice

End-of-Life Care in the Jewish Tradition

An understanding of the unique traditions of Judaism forms the core of the Ruth Hyman Jewish Hospice Program at VNA Health Group’s family of hospice services. As we work with individuals and families, we are guided by the age-old Jewish concept of chesed shel emes – loving kindness.

Ruth Hyman Hospice Program

Accredited by the National Institute for Jewish Hospice, the Ruth Hyman Hospice Program is conducted under the supervision of a rabbinical spiritual care counselor, who helps provide spiritual and emotional guidance during the hospice journey. Combined with our skilled medical team, the Ruth Hyman Hospice Program is focused on helping individuals attain the highest quality of life when facing a terminal illness while observing Jewish laws, tradition, and values. Spiritual care is offered to everyone, including those who are not affiliated with a congregation or who do not have a personal relationship with a rabbi. As the end of life approaches, there is often a greater need for spiritual or religious expression and with it a sense of purpose and feelings of warmth and security. Our comprehensive approach includes:

  • Availability of a Rabbi for spiritual and emotional support in accordance with the family’s own belief system

  • Professional staff trained in Jewish rituals and traditions and sensitive to the needs of people of Jewish faith

  • Sensitivity with providing Holocaust Survivor Care

  • Observance of Jewish Dietary Laws, Sabbath and holiday customs

  • Communicating a sense of comfort through Jewish liturgy, traditions, common language, traditional prayers like the Sh’ma, the V’ahavta, and traditional songs

  • Support for survivors during the bereavement period

  • Rabbinical Oversight
